FILLMORE EAST PERFORMERS: RICHIE HAVENS, ISAAC HAYES and MANY OTHERS
Twenty musicians who performed in "the Church of Rock 'n' Roll," signed this tambourine.
Tambourine signed: "Paul/Whaley", "Lonnie/Jordan/War/2007", "Marty Balin", "Livingston/Taylor/07", "Bruce Johnston", "Dickie Peterson", "Paul Kantner", "John Mayall", "Gary/Duncan/[He has drawn the alchemy symbol for mercury.]", "Magic Dick '07", "Don/Brewer", "Richie/Havens", "David Nelson", "Donny York", "Tom Constanten", "David Frieberg/[symbol for mercury]", "Isaac Hayes", "Mike Love", "Tom Paxton", "Screamin' Scott". In all 20 signatures on the skin. Looking for an East Coast venue to complement his Fillmore West in San Francisco, rock promoter Bill Graham opened the Fillmore East in New York City on March 8, 1968, at a site formerly occupied by a Yiddish theater and then a run-down movie house. The Fillmore East held its last concert on June 27, 1971, but in its slightly over three years it featured performances by many of rocks established and emerging stars, as well as talented jazz and folk artists. Several live performances at the Fillmore East were turned into record albums. Although the former site of the 3,664-seat auditorium is now occupied by an apartment house, a Fillmore East Preservation Society helps keep the legend alive. The signers here include well-known individual performers, LIVINGSTON TAYLOR, JOHN MAYALL, RICHIE HAVENS, ISAAC HAYES and TOM PAXTON. Also represented are members of popular groups, including MIKE LOVE and BRUCE JOHNSTON of the Beach Boys, PAUL KANTNER and MARTY BALIN of the Jefferson Airplane, DON BREWER of Grand Funk Railroad, DAVID NELSON of New Riders of the Purple Sage, DAVID FRIEBERG and GARY DUNCAN of Quicksilver Messenger Service (hence the symbols for mercury), DICKIE PETERSON and PAUL WHALEY of Blue Cheer, DONNY YORK and SCREAMIN' SCOTT SIMON of Sha Na Na, TOM CONSTANTEN of the Grateful Dead, LONNIE JORDAN of War and RICHARD "MAGIC DICK" SALWITZ of the J. Geils Band. Skin is slightly soiled. Johnston's signature light but legible. Overall, fine condition.
