NELSON PAYS FOR REPAIRS OF HIS PLANE'S CABIN HEATER, WHICH MAY HAVE BEEN RESPONSIBLE FOR THE CRASH THAT CLAIMED HIS LIFE TWO MONTHS LATER!
RICK NELSON. Partly Printed Check signed: "Rick Nelson", 8½x3½. Palm Springs, California, 1985 October 25. Drawn on the Central Bank of Glendale on his Rick Nelson-Stone Canyon Band account, payable to Duncan Aviation for $1306.47. Included in a pouch on the back of this framed piece is a portfolio including a copy of an invoice from Duncan Aviation and a copy of the Aircraft Accident/Incident Summary issued by the National Transportation Safety Board for the accident which killed Nelson and 6 others on December 31, 1985. The invoice from Duncan Aviation, dated October 24, 1985, is to SCB Records (Stone Canyon Band), for servicing a Douglas DC-3, number N711Y. In part: "1 Cabin heater inoperative. 1. Troubleshot cabin heater. Cleaned fuel filter, checked fuel pressure and control unit, checked ignition unit and ignitor...hydrolic leak on left hand engine...troubleshot and found fitting at pressure port on hydraulic pump cracked. Replaced fitting. Serviced accumulator and hydraulic reservoir...." Two months later, on December 31, 1985, 45-year-old Rick Nelson, his fiancée and five members of the Stone Canyon Band were killed in an in-flight fire aboard this plane, serviced just two months earlier. The pilot and copilot escaped with serious injuries. The National Transportation Safety Board concluded that "While it could not be established that the fire originated in the cabin heater, there is no doubt that the fire did originate in the area of the heater. If the copilot's statement about the repeated attempts to relight the cabin heater are accurate, then the captain's repeated attempts to trouble-shoot and relight the heater apparently resulted in a fire in the area of the heater. There were other potential ignition sources in the area of the heater...none could be identified as having ignited the fire...in the absence of corroborating evidence, the Safety Board was unable to determine the source of ignition." Rick Nelson, one of the biggest teen idols of the 50s (as Ricky Nelson), continued to perform into the 1980s. He had appeared with his brother David and his parents on television's long-running sitcom, The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet (1952-1966). Lightly creased. Bank stamp touches "Ric". Overall, fine condition. Framed in Gallery of History style: 35x17¾.
