RIP TORN
Torn signs a sheet authorizing all of his profits from his appearance on The United States Steel Hour to be paid to his management
Typed Document Signed: "Rip Torn" as Artist, 1p, 8½x11. No place, 1956 October 12. Begins: "Gentlemen". In full: "In connection with my services on UNITED STATES STEEL HOUR scheduled to be broadcast on OCTOBER 24, 1956 I hereby authorize and direct you to forward my compensation to and in the name of my agents, MCA Artists, Ltd., 598 Madison Avenue, New York 19, New York." Torn is likely referring to his performance in The Little Bullfighter, which did not air until June 5, 1957. The actor also appeared on the prestigious U.S. Steel Hour, which presented over 200 plays from 1953-1963, in The Charmer, which aired on January 1, 1958. Stage, screen and television actor Rip Torn (1931-2019) was perhaps best known for his Emmy-winning role as talk show producer Arthur on The Larry Sanders Show (from 1992). Nominated for Best Supporting Actor in 1983 for Cross Creek, Torn made his film debut in 1956 in Baby Doll. His other feature film credits include King of Kings (1961), Sweet Bird of Youth (1962, reprising his Tony Award-nominated stage role), The Cincinnati Kid (1965), Tropic of Cancer (1970), Coma (1978), Heartland (1979), Wonder Boys (2002) and Men in Black (1997) and its sequel, Men in Black II (2002). Torn, who was married to actress Geraldine Page from 1961 until her death in 1987, first appeared with his future wife in the 1959-1960 Broadway production, Sweet Bird of Youth, for which he was nominated for a 1960 Tony Award as Best Featured Actor in a Play and won the 1950 Theatre World Award for his role as Tom, Jr. He has also appeared in numerous made-for-TV movies and guested on TV series. Paperclip impression in upper left. Light surface creases. Toned. Corners lightly worn and creased. Otherwise, fine condition.
