RISA SCHWARTZ
Rare signature from the Yiddish actress and daughter to actor Maurice
Schwartz
Autograph note signed: "To Bird,/Truly yours/Risa Schwartz",
in black ink, 4½x3¼. Risa Schwartz (b. 1939) is the adopted daughter
of Yiddish actor Maurice Schwartz. Born Fanny Englander in 1939 to
Abraham Joseph Englander and Chana Englander, the young girl was separated
from her parents when they were deported to Auschwitz, being taken
underground and placed with a Christian family in order to avoid being sent to a
concentration camp as well. She and her brother, Moses, were adopted by the
Schwartz in 1947 and renamed Marvin and Risa. The two children learned
English and Yiddish and were raised amongst the Yiddish Theatre community,
with Risa eventually taking up acting herself. She mostly appeared in
small community theatre and her father's own Yiddish productions, with her
only major acting gig being her starring role in the 1959 Broadway play
The Tenth Man, which ran until 1961 and was nominated for three
Tonys. She continued to act in local theatres for the remainder of her
career, eventually retiring to Hawaii. Corners slightly worn. Toned. Paper
remnants on verso. Otherwise, fine condition.
