The longtime Metropolitan Opera singer signs her name in black ink on
this 5x3 card
Signature: "Rita Shane" in black ink. 1 page, 5x3. Operatic
soprano Rita Shane (1936-2014) is best known for her performances in
grand operas around the world. After studying at Barnard College, Shane made her
opera debut as Olympia in Les contes d'Hoffmann (1964) at
Chattanooga; the following year she appeared at the New York City Opera as Donna
Elvira in Don Giovanni (1965). Her name became world-renowned
after a 1971 recording of Les Hugenotts, for which Shane's
performance was considered "borderline astonishing". She went on to perform in
productions of Dialogues des Carmelites and Die
Zauberflote; she made her debut at the Metropolitan Opera in 1973 as
Queen of the Night, going on to perform eight mores seasons there. Shane has
also appeared in Europe in Milan (La Scala), Vienna, Munich and Salzburg. Toned.
