Short autograph letter under letterhead of Baker Lab, Cornell University
Autograph Letter signed: "Roald Hoffmann", 1 page, 8½x11. Ithaca, N.Y., n.d. On letterhead of Baker Laboratory, Cornell University Department of Chemistry to "Dear Mr. Stanhope". In full: "I'm pleased to sign this. It was a wonderful conference!" Born in 1937 to a Polish Jewish family, Hoffmann was smuggled out of a Nazi labor camp by his father, who later died there. Arriving in the U.S. in 1949, Hoffmann learned English as his sixth language. Hoffmann shared the 1981 Nobel Prize in Chemistry with Kenichi Fukui "for their theories, developed independently, concerning the course of chemical reactions". While still engaged in teaching and researching chemistry at Cornell University, Hoffmann launched a second career as a poet, with several collections published since 1984. Hoffmann has also co-authored books on chemistry's connections to other sources of human wisdom. Chemistry Imagined (1993) looks at chemistry from the viewpoints of science, art and literature. Old Wine, New Flasks: Reflections on Science and Jewish Tradition appeared in 1997. Lightly creased. Otherwise, fine condition.
