Price: $180.00
ROBERT A. TAFT and MARTHA B. TAFT
Son and daughter-in-law of William H. Taft sign a pink color
cloth.
Signatures: "Robert A. Taft" and "Martha B.
Taft" on a portion of a pink color cloth, 4x2½ at widest points. The year
"1934" has been added. ROBERT ALPHONSO TAFT (1889-1953) was the
eldest child of William H. Taft and Helen Herron Taft. He married MARTHA WHEATON
BOWERS (1889-1958) in Washington, D.C. on October 17, 1914. Martha's
father, Lloyd Wheaton Bowers, had been President Taft's Solicitor General from
1909-1910. Robert A. Taft represented Ohio in the U.S. Senate from
1939-1953. He was the leading candidate for the Republican presidential
nomination in 1952 until General Eisenhower entered the race; Taft finished
second in the balloting. In 1957, his fellow senators asked John F. Kennedy to
chair a committee to select five of their predecessors whose oval portraits
would adorn the President's Room off the Senate floor. After consulting
historians and politicians, the committee chose Henry Clay, John C. Calhoun,
Daniel Webster, Robert M. LaFollette Sr. and Robert A. Taft. This cloth was
originally intended to be part of a "signature quilt". Loose threads at left
and right edges. Lower edge slightly frayed. Overall, fine
condition.
