ROBERT ALTMAN. Check endorsed: "Robert B Altman", 7¼x3¼.
North Vancouver, B.C., 1970 August 14. Check No. 192, drawn of the
account of Warner Bros. Inc. at the Royal Bank of Canada, Vancouver Branch,
payable to Altman for $317.29. Also signed by a representative of Warner
Bros. Inc. on front. Signed the year that Altman's reputation as a director
was cemented after the release of his dark comedy, M*A*S*H, for which he
was nominated for an Academy Award and a Golden Globe for Best Director. Altman
also directed Brewster McCloud that year. Robert Bernard Altman
(1925-2006) was nominated for Academy Awards for Best Director for
M*A*S*H (1970), Nashville (1975), The Player (1992),
Short Cuts (1993) and Grosford Park (2001) before being awarded a
Lifetime Achievement Oscar in 2006. The director, producer, screenwriter
and editor also won the Golden Globe for Best Director for Grosford
Park, and he was nominated for Best Director Golden Globes for
M*A*S*H, Nashville and The Player and for the Best
Screenplay Golden Globe for Short Cuts. Altman, who made his
directing debut in 1951 (Modern Football), was known for his large,
ensemble casts, whom he encouraged to improvise, and for overlapping
dialogue, which sometime seemed to be coming from a distant source. His
other features include McCabe & Mrs. Miller (1971), The Long
Goodbye (1973), Popeye (1980), Dr T and the Women (2000) and
A Prairie Home Companion (2006), and Altman also directed a long list
of TV episodes and series, beginning with Alfred Hitchcock Presents
(1957) and Peter Gunn (1958). Lightly creased with folds, light vertical
fold touches signature on front, which is also affected by show through of bank
stamps on verso. Bank stamps on verso, not at signature, and on front. Minor
show through of endorsement at left margin.
