The Lieutenant-General who is credited as the founder of the Boy Scouts Association pens a letter to his aunt apologizing for having to decline her invitation and exposing his motives, signed in black ink

Autograph Letter Signed: "Stephenson Baden Powell" in black ink. 2 pages. 4x6¼, front and verso. Place: London. Date: July 4. On stationery embossed with the seal of the Naval and Military Club." In full:My dear Aunt Rosie.Thank you so much for your kind invitation. I am sorry to say that I am engaged both to dinner and to dance on Friday 10th otherwise I should so much have liked to join you - as you so kindly suggested. Yours affectionately". Rare form of signature, perhaps only used with family. Lightly creased with folds, mid-vertical fold at the second "l" of Powell. Ink smudged at 1 letter of writing, light show through of ink. Fine condition. Accompanied by original envelope, 4¾x3¾. British one-penny stamp affixed, postmarked London, July 4, 1903. Addressed by Baden-Powell to: "Lady Flower, 26. Stanhope Gardens, S.W." Slightly creased. Lightly soiled. Neatly opened at upper edge. Written the last year that Baden-Powell served as Commander of the South African Constabulary, which he had organized following the siege of Mafeing during the Boer War (1899-1900). He served in the post from 1900-1903. Robert Stephenson Smyth Baden-Powell (1857-1941), who distinguished himself in military service is best known for founding the Boy Scouts (1907, two years before he was knighted in 1909). Baden-Powell, who based his program on the skills he had learned as a scout in the military, wrote a number of guidebooks for the organization, many of which were illustrated by paintings by Baden-Powell, who was an accomplished artist. In 1911, he helped his sister, Agnes, found the Girl Guides, a similar organization for girls. Other distinguished family members include his uncle, Charles Piazzi Smyth. Two items.
