ROBERT THOMAS BAILEY
Bailey, first editor of the Old Farmer's Almanac, handwrote, signed
and dated this rare letter in 1833 to apologize to Richardson, Lord Holbrook for
his not receiving the Almanac. This letter was written one year after the
magazine changed its name from the Farmer's Almanac to the Old
Farmer's Almanac.
Autograph letter signed "R. B. Thomas". 1 page, 6¼x5¾, docketed on
verso. West Boylston, Massachusetts, Sept. 20, 1833. Addressed to
Richardson, Lord Holbrook. In full: "Sir, Yours of the 17th duly rd. I
am sorry to hear of your misfortune of not getting the Almk [sic]in that
forwardness I could with [illegible] 'The stages run primer" a
week from Boston to W Boylston a proof may be returned every other day - left
[illegible] morning returned a Monday evening - Tues. - w.
[illegible] thurs. out friday do - Yours resptly -". Bailey
(1766-1846, born in Grafton, Massachusetts) was the founder of The
Farmer's Almanac, which changed its name to The Old Farmer's Almanac
in 1832. He was also the Almanac's first editor, a position he held from
1792 until his death in 1846. The annual Almanac is still the oldest
periodical still published in North America. Lightly toned and foxed.
Handwriting is lightly smeared. Show-through from docket on verso. Lower and
left edges are irregular. Small pieces are missing from right corners. Mounting
remnants on left edge of page. Folded twice horizontally and thrice
horizontally. Torn along folds at right edge. Otherwise in fine
condition.
