ROBERT BEIHOFF
Author sends a copy of his new play to John Willis, editor of Theatre
World, in hopes he might enjoy it
Typed letter signed: "Robert Beihoff" in black ink. 1 page,
5¼x7¼. October 5, 1984. Fort Lee, New Jersey. In full: "Dear Mr.
Willis: During my long-past youth. I translated a play called "Le Voyage de
Monsieur Perrichon," a comedy which was instrumental at the time of winning its
author, Labiche a seat in the renown French Academy, the only humorist so
honored. Although the style is old, its Gallic humor and amusing plot could be
made into an entertaining musical, and if a talented actor play Perrichon, I
feel certain of the production's success. Personally, I am financially
comfortable, work when I choose and have had local theatrical experience for
many years. Would you like to see this opus? Sincerely yours". Further
research must be done on this signer. John A. Willis (1916-2010), active in
Theatre World from the beginning, became its chief editor in 1965,
holding that position until 2008. Willis is regarded as one of the foremost
theatre and film historians of the 20th century. While producing (and
presenting) the annual Theatre World Awards, Willis also served on the
nominating committee for the Tony Awards. Theatre World, which
received its own Tony for Excellence in Theatre in 2001, continues
under chief editor Ben Hodges. Normal mailing fold. Light stain in left margin.
