Typed Letter Signed: "Bob Bergland" as Secretary of Agriculture, 1p, 8½x11. Washington,
D.C., 1977 January 31. To Ms. Toni Currin, Dillon, S.C. In part: "The confidence and
enthusiasm of friends like you is not only encouraging, but is as heartwarming to me as the trust
President Carter has chosen to place in me. As I leave the familiar atmosphere of Congress, I hope I
can count on your continued support…." Farmer Bob Bergland (b. 1928) represented
Minnesota in Congress from 1971-1977 when he resigned just nine days before writing this
letter to become Carter's only Secretary of Agriculture (1977-1981). After his run as
Secretary of Agriculture he became the chairman of Farmland World Trade and continued
on to become the Vice President of the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association.
Lightly creased. 1½x1-inch stain at top right corner. Pinhead-size stain at lower right corner.
