ROBERT C. WEAVER. Signature: "Robert C. Weaver", 5x3 card. Robert C. Weaver (1907-1997), a noted economist, was Secretary of the Department of Housing and Urban Development under President Lyndon B. Johnson (1966-1968). Beginning his government career in 1933 as an advisor to the Department of the Interior on Black Affairs, he also served with the Federal Housing Authority (1937-1940), the War Production Board (1940-1944) and headed the Federal Housing and Home Finance Agency (1961-1966). When the agency was elevated to Cabinet level in January 1966, Weaver became the first Black American Cabinet member. During his tenure, he increased the availability of affordable housing, striving for the passage of the Fair Housing Act. Weaver, who died in 1997, was also President of Bernard M. Baruch College of the City University of New York and the author of Negro Labor: A National Problem (1946), The Negro Ghetto (1948) and Dilemmas of Urban America (1965). In July 2000, the HUD headquarters was renamed the Robert C. Weaver Federal Building. Paperclip impression at upper left. On verso, notes in unknown hand, "March 4, 1966" (no show through).
