Autograph Letter Signed: "Robt. C. Winthrop", 2p (integral leaf), 5¼x8¼. Boston, 1867 May
31. On personal letterhead to Charles Lannau Esq.", in full: "Nothing would give me more
pleasure than to aid Mr. Cresault, agreeably to your suggestion of the 28th instant. But the work
of the Peabody Trustees will afford no opening, I fear. I inclose one of the Circulars of our General
Agent, I will send your letter to him. Our funds are small for so large a field & we are constrained
to observe great economy in our arrangements. For myself, I sail for Europe not many days hence.
Dr. Sears & the Executive Committee will go on with the work, & I hope to find them well
advanced on my return. With great regard, Yours truly". Robert C. Winthrop (1809-1894) was
a U.S. Representative from Massachusetts (1840-1850). He was the last member of the
Whig Party to hold office of Speaker. Defeated for re-election by Charles Sumner, Winthrop
retired to literary and philanthropic pursuits. A gifted orator, he was chief speaker at the
laying of the cornerstone of the Washington Monument (1848) and again at the site's
dedication (1885). Writing on each side shows through faintly. Pinhole at blank top center.
