ROBERT CLARK
As an executive of Associated British Picture Corp., he writes a Warner Bros. counterpart about ideas for mutual cooperation
Typed letter signed: "Robert Clark", in blue felt tip, 1 page, 8x10. December 28, 1965. Associated British Picture Corporation, LTD. Legacy of a Spy. Golden Square, London. In full:"Dear Ben, For your information, I enclose a copy of a letter I have to-day addressed to Jack warner and also a copy of a letter I to-day sent to Wolfe Cohen. I am sure that in the end we will find a satisfactory basis for co-operation on production. Yours sincerely". British film producer Robert Clark was an executive of Associated British Picture Corp., owner of the Elstree studio, where many British films were produced. Clark personally produced one of the company's biggest hits, the World War II Dam Busters (1955). Warner Bros., which had owned shares in Associated British Picture since 1940, acquired 40% ownership after World War II, infusing much-needed cash into the enterprise. Relations were not always smooth, however, as this letter indicates. Warner Bros. went ahead with Legacy of a Spy, re-titled The Double Man (1969), with Yul Brynner in the lead, but choosing a different production partner (Albion) and a different filming location (the Austrian Tyrol). After Jack Warner's retirement in 1969, Warner Bros. sold its interest in Associated British Picture, which was moving in a different direction anyhow with the purchase of the independent British TV network, ITV. Folds. Ink stamp on top right corner. Corners lightly creased. Otherwise, fine condition.
