ROBERT CLARKE
Lobby Card signed in 1997
Lobby Card inscribed and signed: "To John Frederick/and members of the/Saturday
Matinee/Robert Clarke/Sep. '97". Color, 14x11. Lobby card for Stagecoach Kid (starring Tim
Holt, 1949). Robert Clarke (1920-2005) became an RKO contract player in the mid-1940s,
making his debut in The Falcon in Hollywood (1944). By the 1950s, he was a "B" movie
star. (His autobiography is titled To 'B' or Not to 'B'.) While some of his roles were
conventional action films, including the title role in Tales of Robin Hood (1952), his true
calling turned out to be monster films: The Man from Planet X (1950), Captive Women
(1952), The Astounding She Monster (1958). In 1959 he produced, directed and starred
(as the monster) in The Hideous Sun Demon, now a cult favorite. Although he continued
to play more conventional roles on TV, including multiple episodes of Dragnet, Clarke found
new fans as the old SF "classics" were discovered by a new generation. He was a guest speaker
and honored guests at fan gatherings in his later years. Clarke did not have a credited role
in Stagecoach Kid. Lower left edge torn away. Multiple tack holes around all edges. Middle
top edge torn. Soiled and lightly creased. Upper left corner stained.
