Accompanied by unsigned envelope (9½x4¼) addressed to George Sanders, General Manager, KWJJ Broadcasting Company, Enka, North Carolina, with printed return address and seal of The School Committee of the City of Boston. Robert Coldwell Wood (1923-2005), a World War II veteran, worked at the U.S. Bureau of the Budget after the war, then taught political science at Harvard and MIT. Active in JFK's 1960 Presidential campaign, Wood headed President Johnson's Task Force on Urban Problems (1964), which recommended creation of a Cabinet Department of Housing and Urban Affairs. When HUD was created the next year, Wood became its first Under Secretary and then its Secretary (1969). Leaving Washington after the Democrats lost the White House, Wood returned to MIT, but also held important public posts in Boston. He headed the MBTA - Boston's public transit system - in 1969-1970, and then became President of the University of Massachusetts. As President of U Mass, he played a key role in bringing the JFK library to the University's Columbia Point campus. From 1978-1980, he was Superintendent of the Boston Public Schools, while that system was still reeling from the court-ordered school busing, desegregation controversy. While doing all this, he continued his college teaching. Fine condition.
