Handwritten quote by the minister and social reformer
Autograph Quotation signed: "I am glad to be next to the man/who comes before me/Robert Collyer", 8¼x5¾. English-born Robert Collyer (1823-1912) worked as a blacksmith while preaching in the Methodist Church, moving to the US in 1850. Collyer's emphatic anti-slavery views were not in favor in the pre-Civil War Methodist Church, resulting in a heresy trial. Shifting to the Unitarian Church, he acquired nationwide fame from his ministry in Chicago. He was active in the Sanitary Commission during the Civil War. His numerous writings included five volumes of his prayers and sermons. Lightly toned, esp. around outer edges. Corners lightly worn and creasd. Small stains on right edge. Otherwise, fine condition.
