Original Art signed: "Robert D. Maurer", 6x4. He has drawn a simple diagram of his optical cable, linking two locations. After a 20-month convalescence from a World War II injury, Robert D. Maurer (b. 1924) attended the University of Arkansas and MIT on the GI Bill, becoming an industrial physicist. Employed by Corning from 1952 to 1989, Maurer dramatically improved the efficiency of optical cable, permitting its use in telecommunications. The holder of key patents in the field, Maurer was enshrined in the National Inventors Hall of Fame in 1993. His many other honors include the National Medal of Technology (2000).
