ROBERT DONAT and BILLY BENNETT. Signatures: "Robert Donat." and, on verso, "Billy Bennett", 5¼x4½ album leaf. Magazine photo, b/w with brown hue, 1x1, affixed at lower right margin of Donat's side; circular newspaper photo, ¾-inch diameter, affixed at lower right margin of Bennett's side. British actor ROBERT DONAT (1905-1958) born Friedrich Robert Donath, won the Best Actor Academy Award for his role as Charles Edward Chipping in Goodbye, Mr. Chips, in 1939, the year that the Oscars were dominated by Gone With the Wind. Trained on the stage, Donat made his film debut in 1932's That Night in London, and two years later he went to Hollywood for The Count of Monte Cristo. Although he had contracts with M-G-M, Warner Bros. and RKO through the remainder of the 1930s, Donat disliked Hollywood - and he appeared mostly in productions shot in England. The actor's film credits also include The Private Life of Henry VIII (1933), The 39 Steps (1935), The Citadel (1938, Best Actor Oscar nomination), The Young Mr. Pitt (1942), The Magic Box (1951) and The Inn of the Sixth Happiness (1958), and he also wrote, directed and produced The Cure for Love (1950). Donat was the uncle of actor Peter Donat. Scottish-born actor BILLY BENNETT appeared in six films between 1928 and 1940: Almost a Gentleman (1928), Radio Parade of 1935 (1934), Soft Lights and Sweet Music (1936, as himself), Calling All Stars (1937, as himself), a remake of Almost a Gentleman (1938) and Young Man's Fancy (1940). He died in England in 1942. Minor show through of photo at the "ona" of Donat. Irregular left edge from removal from bound book. Fine condition.
