ROBERT DONAT. Photograph Mount signed: "Yrs faithfully/Robert Donat". B/w, 3½x5½ overall, image 3½x4½ (two surfaces). Newspaper photograph affixed to front of postal card. Not filled in or stamped on verso. British actor Robert Donat (1905-1958) born Friedrich Robert Donath, won the Best Actor Academy Award for his role as Charles Edward Chipping in Goodbye, Mr. Chips, in 1939, the year that the Oscars were dominated by Gone With the Wind. Trained on the stage, Donat made his film debut in 1932's That Night in London, and two years later he went to Hollywood for The Count of Monte Cristo. Although he had contracts with M-G-M, Warner Bros. and RKO through the remainder of the 1930s, Donat disliked Hollywood - and he appeared mostly in productions shot in England. The actor's film credits also include The Private Life of Henry VIII (1933), The 39 Steps (1935), The Citadel (1938, Best Actor Oscar nomination), The Young Mr. Pitt (1942), The Magic Box (1951) and The Inn of the Sixth Happiness (1958), and he also wrote, directed and produced The Cure for Love (1950). Donat was the uncle of actor Peter Donat. Photograph lightly rippled from mounting. Slightly soiled on verso, which has pencil note (unknown hand) and stains from photo corners. Overall, fine condition.
