ROBERT DONNER
The beloved actor sends holiday greetings to Phyllis Diller on a signed color post card of the Dorado Hilton.
Autograph Note Signed: "Bob Donner" on verso of post card, 5½x3½. Three different stamps affixed, postmarked, Van Nuys, CA, date illegible. Color postcard depicting the Dorado Hilton in Dorado, Puerto Rico. Captioned on verso. In full: "Merry Xmas/Count Your Blessings!!" Donner, who has drawn a holly leaf with three berries next to the first line, has hand addressed the card to: "Phyllis Diller, 163 Rockingham, L.A. 90049". Versatile screen and television actor ROBERT DONNER (1931-2006), who made his screen debut in 1965 (Red Line 7000), has appeared in a long list of feature films, including Cool Hand Luke (1967), El Dorado (1967), Rio Lobo (1970), Chisum (1970), The Man Who Loved Cat Dancing (1973), High Plains Drifter (1973) and Allan Quatermain and the Lost City of Gold (1987). He has also appeared in a number of TV movies, and his television credits include recurring roles as Yancy Tucker on The Waltons (1972-1979) and Exidor, the leader of the Friends of Venus, an invisible cult, on Mork & Mindy (1978-1982). Donner, who appeared as a guest star on over 100 TV shows from 1961-2000, is also known for his athletic abilities. A golfer with a seven handicap, he was a member of the former "Hollywood Hackers" and a leader of Don Porter's Thursday Golf Group. Donner has competed in a number of celebrity golf tournaments as well as tennis tournaments. He remained active in film and television his entire life, even completing his final feature film Hoot shortly before his death in 2006. Comedienne PHYLLIS DILLER (1917-2012), known for her outrageous appearance, zany outfits, distinctive laugh and a stand-up act that featured frequent references to her fictional husband, "Fang", and zingers about her sex appeal and numerous plastic surgeries, got her big break in March 1955 (at age 37), when she debuted at San Francisco's Purple Onion club. A subsequent appearance on The Tonight Show hosted by Jack Paar launched her national career, which got a big boost after Bob Hope saw Diller in a Washington, D.C. club. A favorite of the comedian, Diller would appear in three of Hope's films and 23 of his TV specials. Diller, who recorded her first comedy record album in 1959, took her groundbreaking "funny hausfrau" act to nightclubs and television variety shows and specials and she also appeared on the big screen. Her feature film credits include Splendor in the Grass (1961), The Fat Spy (1966), Boy, Did I Get a Wrong Number! (1966), The Sunshine Boys (1975) and The Silence of the Hams (1994), and she provided the voice of the Queen in A Bug's Life (1998). Despite retiring from nightclub/stage tours in May 2002 at the age of 84, Diller continued to make films (Motorcross Kids, 2004; Forget About It, 2005) and occasionally appear on TV programs, including two episodes of 7th Heaven (2002, 2003) and a guest shot on The Wayne Brady Show (2004). Minor surface creases at upper background of photograph. Fine condition.
