ROBERT DOWNEY [AUGUSTIN DALY]. ALS: "Yours Truly/R. Downey", 1p, 6½x7. New York, 1890 March 13. On letterhead of Daly's Theater, Manager's Office to Mr. Burr Mc Intosh, Marshalltown, Iowa. Begins: "Dear Mr Mc Intosh". In full: "Your very modest letter received O.K. which I handed to Mr Daly to read - and as per request return you the notices & will be pleased to see you about the 1st of April." Heavily penned, ink smudged at some words. Usual folds, not at signature. Slightly soiled at blank margins, light transference from letterhead at lower left margin. Overall, fine condition. Accompanied by original stamped envelope addressed by Downey to: "Mr Burr Mc Intosh, c/o Arthur Rehans, Marshalltown, Iowa". Downey has written "Dalys Theatre" at upper left margin and "at Theatre." at lower left edge. Creased and shaded. Ink smudged at some words. Irregular upper edge from opening. Overall, fine condition. The building that housed Daly's Theatre, formerly at 1221 Broadway, was originally built in 1867 and demolished in 1920. It became Daly's Theatre in 1879. AUGUSTIN DALY (1838-1899), for whom the theatre was named, was a playwright and producer who penned such works as Under the Gaslight (1867) and Pickwick Papers (1868) and produced a number of Broadway plays. Worthy of further research. Two items.
