ROBERT E. HANNEGAN
Truman's Postmaster General writes to author Guy Lynn Sumner thanking
him for sending a copy of his book "Meet Abraham Lincoln".
Typed Letter signed: "Robert E Hannegan" as Truman's
Postmaster General, 1 page, 7x8¾. Washington, 1946 February 18. On
letterhead of The Postmaster General addressed to G. Lynn Sumner, New York, New
York. In full: "Thank you for sending me an inscribed copy of your
book, "Meet Abraham Lincoln". It was thoughtful of you and I shall be interested
in reading it over at an early opportunity. With every good wish, I am Sincerely
yours,"Robert E. Hannegan (1903-1949) was Postmaster
General of the United States (1945-1947). St. Louis Cardinals fans may also
know him as their team's owner from 1947 to 1949. But his greatest contribution
to history is probably his role as a power broker in the Democratic Party.
He supported Harry S. Truman for re-election to Congress after the 1940 tax
fraud conviction of Truman's sponsor Tom Pendergast. This support paid off big
in 1944, when Truman recommended that President Franklin Delano Roosevelt make
Hannegan chairman of the Democratic National Committee (1944-1947). As
DNC chairman, Hannegan wrangled Truman onto the 1944 ticket as Roosevelt's
vice-president. Soiled on verso (no show through). Mailing fold through
center. Fine condition.
