ROBERT F. CURL, JR. Philatelic Envelope signed: "Robert Curl", 6½x3¾. First Day Cover Employ the Physically Handicapped World Congress International Society for the Welfare of Cripples 1960, 4-cent Employ the Handicapped stamp affixed, postmarked New York, New York, August 28, 1960, FIRST DAY OF ISSUE. Curl (b. 1933) of Rice University was co-recipient with Harold Kroto and Richard Smalley of the 1996 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for discovery of fullerenes, also called "buckeyballs", exotic but inexpensively produced carbon compounds which can be manipulated to yield many new materials. Research with fullerenes is expected to result in many important drugs and other products. Pencil note (unknown hand) on verso (no show through). Fine condition.
