ROBERT F. WAGNER, JR.
Signature on a commemorative envelope marking New York's ticker tape parade for John Glenn
Commemorative Envelope signed: "Robert F. Wagner", 6½x3¾. Envelope printed cachet showing the Mercury capsule, with printed caption: New York City welcomes astronaut John Glenn, March 1, 1962, postmarked New York, N.Y., March 1, 1962, 4-cent Project Mercury stamp affixed. Former state legislator Robert F. Wagner, Jr. (1910-1991) was Mayor of New York City (1954-1965). He later served as Ambassador to Spain (1968-1969). A Democrat, he unsuccessfully sought a US Senate seat in 1966, a post his father Robert F. Wagner had held from 1927 to 1949. New York's welcoming parade for Glenn, the first American to orbit the earth, expended 3,474 tons of ticker tape, edging General Douglas MacArthur's 1951 parade for second place all-time, according to the City's Sanitation Department. To this day, the greatest rain of ticker tape was on V-J Day, August 14-15, 1945 (5,438 tons). Slightly worn. Slightly toned. Otherwise, fine condition.
