ROBERT FIZDALE
Fizdale handwrote, signed and dated this letter on his personalized
stationery to New York City's Little Players in 1979, gushing about one of their
performances: "Last night was simply the greatest evening in the theater we
have ever known." Accompanied by original mailing envelope.
Autograph letter signed "Arthur & Bobby" in Robert's hand.
1 page, 7¼x10½, on Fizdale's personalized stationery. April 24, 1979.
Addressed to "One All". In full: "Dear One All - The Little
Players have risen to greater heights than ever before. Last night was simply
the greatest evening in the theater we have ever known. Your old friends were
helpless with laughter and moved to tears. Your new friends were incredulous
with delight at the beauty of it all. We know the work and the love that goes
into the preparation of those 'little' evenings at home and it is our privilege
to appreciate the genius and the perfection of every second of those evenings.
You must have felt the wounded gasps from the audience at Isabel's first
announcement that it was time to close and the joyous cries of relief that we
were allowed to be in that special heaven you have created for a few moments
longer. We shall live in limbo till you re-open. All love,".
Lightly toned and creased. Folded twice and unfolded. Otherwise in fine
condition. Accompanied by: Original mailing envelope from Fizdale's
personalized stationery. Hand-addressed in Fizdale's hand to The Little Players,
New York City. Postmarked New York City, April 27, 1979. With one 15¢ American
flag stamp affixed. Lightly toned, creased and rippled. Flap was neatly torn
open. Otherwise in fine condition. ROBERT FIZDALE (1920-1995, born in
Chicago, Illinois) and ARTHUR GOLD (1917-1990, born in Toronto, Ontario,
Canada) met while students at Juilliard. The partners helped transform the
duo-piano repertory by commissioning and performing many new works. They
appeared on a stage and on a number of recordings and were nominated for a
1963 Grammy Award for Best Chamber Music Performance. Fizdale and Gold also
authored the book, The Divine Sarah (1991), a biography of Sarah
Bernhardt, the first international superstar.
