ROBERT FIZDALE
Fizdale handwrote, signed and dated this letter from Water Mill, New
York to Frank Peschka and Bill Murdock, founders of New York City's Little
Players theatre company, in 1979. In it, he thanks them for flowers and a letter
and, in the postscript, adds a list of plays that his partner Arthur Gold wanted
to see for the Little Players' 20th season.
Autograph letter signed " Arthur & Bobby" in black ink.3 pages, 7¾x9¾, 2 sheets, front and verso, on thin paper. Addressed Water
Mill, New York, July 21, 1979 in blue ink. Addressed to "Dearest of All
Sentient Beings". In full: "Dearest of All Sentient Beings: How
you spoil us! First we return to Water Mill and immediately afterwards the most
beautiful flowers arrived. So beautifully arranged that you might have done it
yourselves. Please thank the Doty's for us. We enjoyed meeting them so much And
how we regret not having had a day at Cardinal House! And now your letter. We
shall treasure it always. The scene at the ladies room at Blossom is worthy of
Le Cabinet de Toillete chez Maxim in Le Vacanze à Parizi. Your letter meant
something special to us coming from you two. We're so excited about your work on
the play. We shall ask Jerry - who arrives here today for Saratoga - to find out
if we can see it in Paris in Sept. All Love from your devoted".
Postscripted: "Arthur has just handed me a list of requests for the
20th season. Lazy River, Eyes of Blue allof Noel Coward,
all of Kurt Weill Glow Worm, Chinese Opera Sebremann P. S. We haven't
touched the Poulenc Waltz for over a year and so we ran it up for the cassette
But now we shall make a better tape for you." Lightly toned, creased and
rippled. Light show-through from both sides, which touches handwriting but not
signature. Otherwise in fine condition. Accompanied by: Original mailing
envelope, signed "R. Fizdale" in return address on flap. Postmarked Water
Mill, New York, July 23, 1979. Hand-addressed by Fizdale to "Messers. Peschka
& Murdock", Huron, Ohio. With one 15¢ American flag stamp affixed.
Lightly toned, soiled and creased. Envelope was neatly cut open at top.
Otherwise in fine condition. FRANK PESCHKA and BILL MURDOCK
werefounders of New York City's Little Players theatre company.
ROBERT FIZDALE (1920-1995, born in Chicago, Illinois) and ARTHUR
GOLD (1917-1990, born in Toronto, Ontario, Canada) met while students at
Juilliard. The partners helped transform the duo-piano repertory by
commissioning and performing many new works. They appeared on a stage and on
a number of recordings and were nominated for a 1963 Grammy Award for Best
Chamber Music Performance. Fizdale and Gold also authored the book, The
Divine Sarah (1991), a biography of Sarah Bernhardt, the first international
superstar.
