Robert Fulton who designed and built first practical
commercial steamboat signs an autogrpah
sentiment.
Autograph sentiment signed: "Yours truly/R.
Fulton", 1p, 6¾x1¾, mounted to page of similar size.
Recipient's name and date also in Fulton's hand: "C.D. Calder
Esqr/Jan. 9th 1813". In 1801, Fulton was commissioned by Robert R.
Livingston, U.S. Minister to France, to build a steamboat. After successful
experiments on the Seine in France, Fulton returned to the United States
succeeding with the Clermont, which steamed from New York to Albany and
back, August 17-22, 1807. It was the first commercially successful steamboat.
Fulton is scarce in any form. Folds, vertical fold touches the "n" in
Fulton. Lightly stained from glue on verso. Corners snipped. Light show through
of writing on verso. Mounting remnants on verso of attached sheet lightly show
through.
