ROBERT GRANT
Rare signature from the author on a letter saying that he will be unable to join a friend for dinner due to the late arrival of his train
Autograph letter signed: "Robert Grant", in black ink, 2 pages (front and back), 4½x6¾. Boston, December 11, 1894. In part: "My dear Mr. Ford, As my train does not reach New York until 7, I can not dine with you at the Cloister on Friday, before 7:30 or so. If that will do, I will be there, but in citizens dress, unless I hear from you". American author Robert Grant (1852-1940) often wrote his works based on the difficulties facing Americans of the late 1800's and early 1900's, beginning with his book The Confessions of a Frivolous Girl, a depiction of a young girl's life. Other notable works include Face to Face (which detailed the difference between English and American manners), The Orchid (relates to divorce in the upper class), and The High Priestess (demonstrating the difficulties of a woman trying to pursue a career). Previously a lawyer, Grant was called out of retirement in 1927 to review the trial of Sacco and Vanzetti to determine whether or not the trial was believed to be fair. He and two other panelists did determine the trail to be fair, but this decision was later criticized by some, stating that Grant was unfit to judge the fairness due to his own xenophobia, limited law education, and his age. Normal mailing fold. Heavily toned. Light surface creases. Corners lightly worn and creased. Lightly soiled. Ink slightly smeared in some areas, but clearly legible. Otherwise, fine condition.
