Annotated Album Leaf Signed: “John Heawood”, “Edmund Coffon”, “Monica Browming”, “Robert Helpmann Jr”, “Hattie Jacques”, “Paul Huckman”, “Irene Worth”, “Henry Sherek”, “Jane Sarifs”, “Ckleen Marcos”, “Maria Dudley”, “Panay W”, “Richard Gilbert”, “Shirly Hall”, “Mario Hoffman”, “Clarie Damn”, “Clarry Ashton” and “Dophui Barkes” in black and blue ink. JOHN HEAWOOD (1861-1955) was a British mathematician who spent his career at Durham University, where he was appointed Lecturer in 1885. He was alter Censor of St Cuthbert's Society between 1897 and 1901 succeeding Frank Byron Jevons in the role, Senior Proctor of the university from 1901, professor in 1910 and Vice-Chancellor between 1926 and 1928. He was awarded an Order Of the British Empire, as Honorary Secretary of the Preservation Fund. He spent most of his life working on the four color theorem and in 1890 he exposed a flaw in Alfred Kempe's proof, which had been considered as valid for eleven years. However, the four color theorem itself was finally established by a computer-based proof in 1976. He was fond of country pursuits, and one of his interests, unusual for a mathematician, was Hebrew. Australian-born dancer, choreographer and actor Sir ROBERT MURRAY HELPMANN (1909-1986) appeared in several feature films, including The Red Shoes (1948), 55 Days at Peking (1963), Chitty Chitty Bang Bang (1968) and Second Time Lucky (1984, his last film). He also made a few guest appearances on television from 1953-1985 and co-starred with Katharine Hepburn in Shakespearean plays. Trained in ballet, Helpmann became a director of the Australian Ballet Company and directed Dame Margot Fonteyn's world tour in 1963. (Fonteyn reportedly considered him her favorite dance partner.) He was honored with a CBE in 1964, and as Australia's Man of the Year in 1965. By the1970s, Australia had grown used to Helpmann's flamboyant persona. His appointment as Artistic Director of the Adelaide Festival of Arts from 1970 to 1976 was well received. People of Melbourne honoured him as their 1974 King of Moomba. British actress HATTIE JACQUES (1922-1980) was a comedy talent who appeared in films and television for over thirty years. She appeared in fourteen films from the British "Carry On" series beginning with Carry On Sargent in 1958. She met writer and actor Eric Sykes and soon formed a lifetime friendship. The two starred as brother and sister in Sykes and A... (1960-1965) and Sykes (1972-1979). RICHARD GILBERT (b. 1924) is a director and producer who is best known for The Last Voyage of Henry Hudson (1964), Haida Carver (1964) and Altitude Zero to Infinity (1969). Co-signers merit for further research. Lightly toned and creased. Otherwise, fine condition.
