Autograph letter signed: "Robt. J Burdette", 1 page, 5¼x8. May
24, 1884. Ardmore, Pennsylvania. May 24, 1884. In full: "My dear boy,
A wiser man than the President has said "A merry heart doeth good like a
medicine; but a broken spirit drieth the bones." I don't think I can improve on
the sentiment Yours". Humorous essayist and lecturer Robert J. Burdette
(1844-1914) wrote columns for the Burlington Hawkeye, and later the Brooklyn
Daily Eagle, which were reprinted in newspapers across America. His humor
extended to poems ("My First Cigar"), and his popular lectures included the
topic "The Rise and Fall of the Mustache." In the 1890s, he became a Baptist
minister. Normal mailing folds. Left edge frayed and torn. Bottom corners
creased. Two cuts in top margin where a card was previously inserted. Light
surface creases. Slightly toned. Otherwise, fine condition.
