Signature: "Robt. J. Burdette/"Hawkeye"/Burlington, Iowa", 3¾x2 affixed to 4x2½ card. Humorous essayist and lecturer Robert J. Burdette (1844-1914) wrote columns for the Burlington Hawkeye, and later the Brooklyn Daily Eagle, which were reprinted in newspapers across America. His humor extended to poems ("My First Cigar"), and his popular lectures included the topic "The Rise and Fall of the Mustache." In the 1890s, he became a Baptist minister. Toned. Soiled across card and affixed backing. Corners slightly worn and creased on card. Backing card slightly rippled on top margin. Otherwise, fine condition.
