ROBERT KEELEY
Keeley handwrote and signed this undated letter to fellow actor James Thorne. to ask whether Keeley's theatre manager would hire Thorne in London.
Autograph letter signed "R. Keeley". 3 pages, 7¼x9 (one sheet folded, front and verso). Addressed to James Thorne. at Theatre Royal, Edinburgh, Scotland. Keeley, when not writing about a "triumph" that he had on stage, asked his friend Thorne how negotiations for a new engagement in London went with Keeley's boss Charles Kimble in this letter: "...I am convinced ifthe reins of government remain in his hands next season, you need not again leave London. - But, my dear fellow, as there is an if in the business, you must act with the becoming caution of a man who hasn't only himself to think about, and do not fly off from your old love before you are on with your new - leave things in Edinburgh as much in status quo as to your return, as possible - for, if you do not join us, there is no engagement at any of our Minors or provincials could possibly pay you as Edinburgh does...". Keeley (1793-1860) was a well-known British actor who had starred in productions at Covent Garden. He was a successful low comedian, with a humorous style based on his stocky appearance, slow, jerky delivery and a good line in pathos. Keeley's roles include Dogbery inMuch Ado About Nothing and the nurse Mrs. Gamp in the stage version of Dickens' Martin Chuzzlewit, in which he was coached by Charles Dickens himself. Lightly toned, stained and creased. Large piece has been torn from left side of page. Folded five times horizontally and twice vertically. Wax seal remnants on page 4 with paper loss (touches writing on page 3). Heavily worn, torn, toned and with pinholes along folds. Tape repair along spine of letter. Otherwise in fine condition.
