The developer of the Jarvik-7 artificial heart signs a 4x6 photograph of him holding one of his models
Photograph signed: "R. Jarvik Koffler", in blue ink, B/w 4x6. Robert Koffler Jarvik (b. 1946) is an American medical scientist and entrepreneur, famous for his co-development of the Jarvik-7 artificial heart. Obtaining a degree in medical engineering but never completing an internship, Jarvik was brought to the University of Utah where he worked with mentor Willem Johan Kolff to help develop and improve upon a previous artificial heart design, with the previous design only sustaining life for 10 days at most. It was with Koffler that he developed the Jarvik-7, which although was a cumbersome and large system, was far more successful, with life sustaining up to 620 days. In 2006, controversy surrounded Jarvik after he began to appear in a series of commercials for the cholesterol medication Lipitor, due to his name being used as an endorsement despite not being a licensed practitioner. However, the company later dropped Jarvik from their advertisements. Image pixelated from resizing. Fine condition.
