WISH WYNNE AND ROBERT L. WHITTINGTON
The actress and music hall performer signs on a 3½x4½
original art piece, drawn but unsigned by Robert L. Whittington. A very
rare piece!
Original art signed: "Very sincerely, Wish Wynne", 2¾x4½
affixed to a 3½x4½ card (2 surfaces). Wish Wynne (1882-1931) was an
actress known for her character songs and sketches, performing popularly
between 1910 and 1930. She began performing young, appearing on stage at the age
of 12 in the Drury Lane pantomime of Christmas titled Dick
Whittington. She amassed many performances to her name, including a
600 plus performance role as Janet Cannot in the drama The Great
Adventure based on Arnold Bennet's novel Buried Alive.
Wynne would eventually move on to music hall performances, where she would begin
her successful work performing character songs and sketches. She would
continue to perform in halls throughout her life until her very tragic death,
which occurred shortly after collapsing during one of her shows. Wynne chose
to perform in the desire to not disappoint her fans, even though she was
suffering from a very serious year long illness due to a botched surgery the
year before. She was brought to the hospital after collapsing, dying shortly
after. Pen and ink drawing by Robert L. Whittington, who sketched celebrities
from the Golden Age of Hollywood. The artist does not sign this piece. Mounting sheet is
slightly creased at lower edge. Fine condition.
