ROBERT LANSING. Typed Letter signed: "Robert Lansing", 1p, 7x9¼. On letterhead of The Counselor for the Department of State with embossed seal. Washington, D.C., 1915 June 15. To Honorable John Barrett, Director General Pan American Union, Washington, D.C. In full: "It was very gratifying to me to receive your letter of the 9th with its enclosure. I thank you very sincerely for your good wishes on my behalf." An authority on international law, Lansing (1864-1928) became Counsellor for the Department of State in 1914. President Wilson was impressed with Lansing's abilities and appointed him Secretary of State when William Jennings Bryan resigned in June 1915. He is no doubt acknowledging congratulations on this nomination in this letter. Lansing was a member of the U.S. delegation to the Paris Peace Conference in 1919. However, Lansing had strong disagreements with Wilson about the Versailles Treaty and the League of Nations. Although he had serious reservations about the peace treaties, he attempted to gain Senate approval of them. After President Wilson suffered a stroke in September 1919, the office of Secretary of State became more important because of the President's illness. Lansing was asked to resign in February 1920. Lightly creased. 3½x¼" stain in lower right, not touching signature. Typed caption affixed at top. Overall, fine condition.
