Check signed: "Robert Lathan" in black ink. 5½x2½. April 14, 1910. Drawn from the account of Robert Lathan at Exchange Banking and Trust Company in Charleston, South Carolina. Payable for $1.75 to Julius Smith. Robert Lathan, Jr. (1881-1937) was a journalist and historian. Lathan was editor of the Charleston News and Courier from 1910-1927 and later of the Asheville, NC, Daily Citizen 1927-1937. In 1925, he was awarded a Pulitzer Prize for his editorial, "The Plight of the South", published in the Charleston News and Courier on November 5, 1924. In 1979, the South Carolina Press Association named him to the Press Hall of Fame. Toned. Creases throughout. Puncture holes spelling "paid" as well as other holes in center. Endorsed on verso.
