11x13¾, vintage black and white photograph of Mitchum and actress Laraine Day shown in a scene from the 1946 film The Locket, and obtained from Day's estate.
Photograph, signed and probably inscribed to Laraine Day. B/w 11x13¾. Shown in a still from the 1946 film-noir drama The Locket. ROBERT MITCHUM (1917-1997) played mostly villains early in his film career, including Out of the Past (1947) and Cape Fear (1962). In 1945, he starred in The Story of G.I. Joe and earned his first and only Oscar nomination. He also portrayed detective Phillip Marlowe in Farewell My Lovely (1975) and The Big Sleep (1978), and starred in the TV miniseries The Winds of War (1983) and its sequel, War and Remembrance (1989). This item is from the estate of actress Laraine Day, formerly married from 1947 to 1960 to baseball Hall of Fame manager Leo Durocher. They enjoyed the friendship of US Presidents, Hollywood celebrities and baseball veterans, many of whom inscribed remembrances to the couple. Day considered her performance in The Locket to have been the best of her career. She passed on an opportunity to play the female lead in It's a Wonderful Life, a part which went instead to Donna Reed, because of her commitment to The Locket. The handwritten message on the photo has faded badly, and suffers from poor contrast. Conservation efforts might be required in order to read it. Signature faded and in poor contrast. Toned and lightly creased. Corners worn. Otherwise, fine condition.
