poet Robert Montgomery (1807-1855) is best known for his 1828 poem, "The
Omni-presence of the Diety", which had attained its 28th edition by 1858.
That poem as well as his 1830 work, "Satan: a Poem", received harsh criticism
from Thomas B. Macaulay, but the censure did not diminish the popularity of his
works, which also included "The Puffiad" (1830), "Oxford" (1831), "The Messiah"
(1832) and "Woman, the Angel of Life" (1833). Also the author of numerous
devotions and theological works, Montgomery became a minister in 1835 and led
congregations in Scotland and England. Lightly creased with folds,
mid-vertical fold at the "go" of Montgomery. Stray pencil mark at upper blank
margin of first page, which has light pencil note (unknown hand) at upper
margin. Slightly soiled and shaded. Ink smudged at some words. Chipped at upper
blank edge and blank left edge of integral leaf. Overall, fine
condition.
