ROBERT OGDEN DOREMUS
The innovative chemist, known for his expertise in toxicology, conditionally accepts an invitation.
Third Person Autograph Letter. 1 page, 5x8. No place, 1865 December 8. In full: "Dr. Doremus presents his compliments to Mr. Graham and shall be most happy to avail himself of his polite invitation to visit the 'Traveler's Club' next Saturday 20th, unless the culmination of certain foretold developments should interfere". Medical doctor and chemist Robert Ogden Doremus (1824-1906) was Professor of Natural History at the Free University (now City College of New York) for over half a century (1851-1902). An expert on toxicology, Doremus was often called upon by coroner's and district attorneys in cases of suspected poisoning, and testified in high profile murder trials. His own lab used unprecedentedly careful measures to prevent contamination of evidence. Doremus was an inventor as well, developing a more efficient gunpowder, improving hospital disinfection methods, and securing twelve patents for fire extinguishers. Normal mailing folds. Creased and toned. Otherwise, fine condition.
