ROBERT P. PATTERSON
As the new Secretary of War, he accepts congratulations on his
appointment.
Typed Letter signed: "Robert P. Patterson", 1 page, 5¼x6½. No
place, 1945 September 26. On official letterhead to H. S. J. Sickel,
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. In full: "I appreciate very much the
sentiments expressed in your letter of congratulation. With best regards, I am,
Sincerely". Robert Porter Patterson (1891-1952), a World War I
veteran (Distinguished Service Cross) and federal judge, was appointed by
President Roosevelt to the War Department in 1940, first as an Assistant
Secretary and shortly thereafter as Under Secretary. President Truman had
considered appointing Patterson to the Supreme Court, but when Henry Stimson
resigned as Secretary of War, the President nominated him for that post instead
(officially dated from September 27, 1945). He served until mid-1947,
pushing desegregation of the armed forces and advocating unification of the
services. Patterson served later as President of the New York Bar Association
and of the Council on Foreign Relations.Horizontal fold crease. Lightly
soiled. Otherwise, fine condition.
