ROBERT PENN WARREN
The only writer to win Pulitzer Prizes in both fiction and poetry agrees to autograph books
Autograph Letter signed: "Robert Penn Warren", 1p, 5½x8½. West Wardsboro, Vermont, 1980 July 26. To "Dear Mr. Cowen", in full: "Of course, I'd be glad to autograph books for you. As for cost, you can tell from the stamps on the package - what you have to pay to send would cover return, of course. I hope America isn't treating you too badly. Where are you studying her? And what? All the best -". Robert Penn Warren (1905-1989) captured the 1947 Pulitzer Prize in Fiction for All the King's Men, his classic novel of southern politics based on the career of Louisiana Governor Huey Long. He won the 1958 Pulitzer Prize in Poetry for Promises: Poems 1954-1956, and the 1979 Pulitzer Prize in Poetry for Now and Then: Poems 1976-1978. He served as Consultant in Poetry to the Library of Congress from 1944-1945 and was the first Poet Laureate Consultant in Poetry to the Library of Congress from 1986-1987. In 1980, Robert Penn Warren was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Slightly frayed along right edge. Pencil note (unknown hand) and faint pencil erasure in lower right corner. Otherwise, fine condition.
