First Day Cover signed: "Robert Penn Warren", 6½x3½. FDC honoring John Steinbeck,
15-cent stamp affixed, postmarked Salinas, California, February 27, 1979, FIRST DAY OF
ISSUE. Robert Penn Warren (1905-1989) captured the 1947 Pulitzer Prize in Fiction for
All the King's Men, his classic novel of southern politics based on the career of Louisiana
Governor Huey Long. He won the 1958 Pulitzer Prize in Poetry for Promises: Poems
1954-1956, and the 1979 Pulitzer Prize in Poetry for Now and Then: Poems 1976-1978.
He served as Consultant in Poetry to the Library of Congress from 1944-1945 and was
the first Poet Laureate Consultant in Poetry to the Library of Congress from 1986-1987.
In 1980, Robert Penn Warren was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Light crease in
