ROBERT R. LIVINGSTON
Engraving of the politician considered to be one of the founding fathers
Engraving unsigned, 8x11. Facsimile signature featured at bottom center: "Rob R. Livingston". Labeled beneath: "From the original Picture in the possession of the Publishers." Painted by Chappel. Engraved by Phillibrown. Issued by Johnson, Fry & Co. Publishers, N.Y. Robert R. Livingston (1746-1813) was a politician and diplomat who was one of the founding fathers. A member of the Committee of Five, the group responsible for drafting the Declaration of Independence, Livingston never actually had a chance to sign the document as he was recalled by the state of New York, the state needing him to resume his duties as Recorder of New York City. Known as "The Chancellor", he held one of the highest ranking New York state legal offices for 25 years. Additionally, from 1781 to 1783, Livingstone served as U.S. Secretary of Foreign Affairs. Subsequently, he was U.S. Minister to France from 1801 to 1804, during which time he helped negotiate the Louisiana Purchase. Lightly toned, especially at edges. Corners and edges gently worn. Otherwise, fine condition.
