the US, signing with the pen name he used for his books on espionage.
Autograph Letter signed: "Ronald Seth", 1 page, 7¾x10½.
Washington, D.C., 1956 March 3. To "Dear Miss Manning", in
full: "I feel that I must tell you what a very great pleasure it has been
for me to make your acquaintance, and to tell you how very grateful I am for
your very generous hospitality. Mrs. Creighton really did me a very good turn
when she made it possible for me to meet you. I shall leave America with only
the happiest of memories, and among them will be my meeting with you. I shall
hope to meet you again in the not too distant future. With every good wish,
Yours Sincerely". Robert "Ronald Seth" Chartham (1911-1985), educated
at the Sorbonne and Cambridge, was the first to give sex instruction courses to
English high school students (1930). During the decade which followed, he
gave college lectures on the topic "How to Enjoy Sex." Chartham answered
about 4,000 letters a year from persons querying him about sexual problems.
In 1940, he was recruited by Britain's Special Operations Executive
(S.O.E., known colloquially as "Churchill's Secret Army." Parachuted for an
espionage mission into Estonia, he was captured by the Germans. He managed
to convince the German SD that he would work as their double agent. Himmler
planned to send him back into Britain on a peace mission unauthorized by
Hitler, but the war ended before that plan could be implemented. In the
postwar years, Chartham used the pen name "Ronald Seth" to write numerous
books on spies and spying, including a memoir, A Spy Has No Friends
(1952). In 1972 he published an Encyclopedia of Espionage. Multiple
mailing folds. Edges lightly toned. Corners lightly creased. Notch at top left
