Typed letter signed: "Robert S. Calvert", as Comptroller, in black ink, 1 page 8½x11. Austin,
Texas, June 13, 1972. On official letterhead of the Comptroller of Public Accounts Texas, to
"Dear Mr. Pruett" J.L Pruett, Clute, Texas, in full: "It is my pleasure to send you my autograph.
I have placed it on the bottom of a short biography. The biography will give the children some idea
of my background of experience for the position of Comptroller. I am enclosing three. Of course, the
autograph may be clipped off if you, or the children, prefer the autograph only. You are to be
commended for the work you are doing, and I wish you success in all your endeavors. Sincerely
yours," Robert S. Calvert (1892-1981) was the longest serving Texas Comptroller of Public
Accounts (1949-1975). A public bigot, he called Congress woman Eddie Bernice Johnson
a "[Explicit] woman who doesn't know what she is talking about" when she filed a complaint
with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission in 1973. The following year, Bob
Bullock challenged him for his seat, promising reform of office operations. His aggressive
campaign scared Calvert out of the races, and Bullock went on to serve four consecutive terms.
