ROBERT SHAW. Signature: "Robert Shaw", 1p, 4x5¾. Music
Director and Conductor Robert Shaw (1916-1999) began his career in New York,
where he formed and directed the Collegiate Chorale and organized
choruses for such conductors as Arturo Toscanini and Bruno Walter. In 1948, he
formed the Robert Shaw Chorale, which was America's premier touring chorale
for 17 years, visiting some 30 countries on several tours for the State
Department. Shaw then became Music Director for the San Diego Symphony
and was Associate Conductor for the Cleveland Orchestra for ten years
before joining the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, where he served as
Music Director for 21 years (1967-1988). Over his long and distinguished
career, Shaw was a frequent guest conductor for orchestras in the U.S.
and abroad, and he won a number of awards, including 16 Grammy Awards,
the first Guggenheim Fellowship awarded to a conductor and the George
Peabody Medal. A Kennedy Center Honoree in 1991, Shaw was inducted
into the American Classical Music Hall of Fame in 1998. Slightly creased,

condition.
