ROBERT STACK
Signed b/w publicity photo by Roman Freulich, for the 1941 western Badlands of Dakota,
of a curly-haired Stack tuning up the engine on his racing hydroplane
Photograph signed "Robert Stack". Typed notations and Post-It note affixed on verso. Black
ink notations in unknown hand and black ink stamp on verso. B/w, 9¾x8 overall, 9x7¼
image, one surface. Photo by Roman Freulich of Universal Pictures, with photo credit
stamped on verso in purple ink. ©1941 Universal Pictures Co., Inc. Publicity photo for
Badlands of Dakota (1941). According to the typed notations affixed on verso, Stack is shown
maintaining the engine of his racing hydroplane. Badlands of Dakota marked Stack's entry
into westerns and had him rubbing shoulders with the likes of Wild Bill Hickok and Calamity
Jane. We're pretty sure there weren't any racing hydroplanes back then. Stack (1919-2003,
born in Los Angeles, California) is best known for his portrayal of Treasury Agent Eliot
Ness fighting crime in Chicago of the 1930s in the popular TV series The Untouchables(1959-1963). Stack's other TV successes included Unsolved Mysteries, which he hosted
from 1987 to 2002. His 60 years in feature films included an Academy Award nomination
for Best Supporting Actor for Written on the Wind (1956). Lightly toned, cracked, creased
and bowed. Light scratches on image (not visible head-on). Otherwise in fine condition.
