The businessman and politician signs this handwritten letter to a Mr.
Strenton regarding personal favors
Autograph letter signed: "Robert T. Lincoln", 3p, 4½x7.
Chicago, 1902 December 31. On "60. Lake Shore Drive." stationery to Mr.
Strenton. In full: "I am writing to ask you to do some personal favors
for me. The steamer 'Commonwealth' sails from Boston Jany 3d for Italy &
Egypt & will have as passengers young Norman Williams & his bride &
in another party Miss Esther Harrison. Inclose note to Mr. Williams & Miss
Harrison which I would like to have with them on the ship. Please also procure
for me & have put on the ship two very nice bunches of
flowers, one for Mr. Williams & one for Miss Harrison, attaching the
enclosed cards to them. Please send the memorandum of all [illegible]
incurred in this to me here. I am [illegible] that your health is
improving and am very glad of it. With all good wishes for the New Year."
Handwritten postscript: "Please wire me a receipt of this that the
matter is having attention." Robert Todd Lincoln (1843-1926),
the eldest and only surviving son of President Abraham Lincoln, was Secretary
of War in Garfield's Cabinet (1881-1885) and U.S. Minister to Great
Britain from 1889-1893. In 1897, upon the death of George Pullman, Lincoln,
who had moved to Chicago in May 1865, the month after his father's
assassination, became acting President of Pullman's company. He served as
permanent President from 1901-1911 and Chairman of the Board from
1911-1922. Lincoln was present at three presidential assassinations
(those of his father, and of Garfield and McKinley). He made his last public
appearance on May 30, 1922 at the dedication of the Lincoln Memorial and is
buried in Arlington National Cemetery. Folds, horizontal fold just touches the
upper loop of the "R" in Robert. First page is lightly soiled, light stain at
lower right margin touches 1 word of writing. Nicked at lower margin at
mid-vertical fold, pinhead-size hole at cross folds. Mounting remnants on verso
of integral leaf (no show through). Otherwise, fine condition.
